From Dan
I hope you'll join us this week for Katie Ohh & Will Hoge. A lot of people have worked really hard on making this show special. As of now we've got about 25-30 tickets left. It will prove to be one of the better things we've put together.
The Rooftop (Part 1)
During the sleepless nights and panic-inducing days of this project, long before there was ever any public knowledge about what I was up to, I was plotting to do something completely ridiculous and/or just plain stupid, and that was to try to open a rooftop venue and bar.
I had developed a good relationship with successful real estate and hospitality businessman John Aderholt, to whom I expressed this desire. He put me in contact with Desmone Architects of Pittsburgh, who had just completed a rooftop concept for his family's hotel in Lawrenceville - the TRYP.
So I went on ahead with the floor plan and rending process in May of 2020 to get a vision for it.
And here's what we came up with:
The way things turned out, it just wasn't in the cards. Material costs increased drastically during Covid, as well as numerous work delays, and I realized that I simply was not capable of bringing the whole project online at the same time. I had to pursue what felt most logical, instead of executing the complete moonshot idea.
And I told myself that I could come back to it later.
So I decided to make a hedge:
- we reinforced the third floor ceiling in order to bring the code-compliant floor strength to the roof deck and so that IF the time came that the rooftop project was sensible, we wouldn't have to do any construction on the third floor below.
- We brought the masonry for the stair towers all the way up past the roof line, so that we could simply continue them up for roof access IF the time ever came. (building code requires two means of egress)
- We brought the elevator up to the roof as well IF the project started to make sense.
Today, It doesn't seem like we're quite ready yet. And the scope of what I'd like to do up there has changed.
My thoughts are to:
- Make the rooftop an extension of our private venue on the third floor. Think: cocktail hours and ceremonies and small events.
- Treat the space as a garden and greenhouse, growing our herbs and vegetables for the bar offerings.
- Treat the space as a bodyweight fitness studio, for yoga, pilates, etc.
- Offer the rooftop as a monthly co-working space for the area's remote workers and people that need a meeting space throughout the week.
- Incorporate solar panels into the design to mitigate the exorbitant electric bills that we're paying (which is subject to approval from the historic tax credit officials in Washington, DC)
